| After leaving the confessional, Leena knew she had to leave with all speed, but couldn’t quite think clearly for a few moments. Her discussion with Father Falconi had left her in something of a daze- just a few hours ago, all she had been thinking about was enjoying a day off with her sisters. Now, her entire life snatched away from her, all she wanted, and probably needed, was a few moments in the predawn silence of the grand chapel to let the enormity of the situation just sink in.
But, on the other hand, she knew that the Honor Guard were on their way. ‘It’s funny,’ she thought, ‘it wasn’t all that long ago I thought of them as a necessity of the extreme days we live in. Now they are the law and I am the criminal.’
Her brain paused for a moment
‘…criminal…but I just exist. Is it not enough that everything I love is taken from me, but that I must be despised as well?’
She sighed, which manifested in a stream of gurgles ‘Maybe I should just let them end all of this; it’d save everyone a lot of time and pain’
That thought, however, had the opposite effect on her, crystallizing her thoughts and urging her into motion. It would seem that, on some level, at least, she did not want to die, not yet anyway.
She began gliding towards the front, towards the door she had entered, before she stopped cold. If the Honor Guard were coming, they would at the very least post a guard at the front door, and that was probably where the main force would come from as well.
Sooo, back door? Eh, possibly, but that was another obvious option, and for a fleeing suspect that was probably what they would expect
Options, options; she could try climbing up to the choir floors and dropping down to another rooftop, or go out a window…
at that moment, she heard a creaking noise- she had forgotten about Father Falconi. Leena dropped as quietly as she could, flattening herself to the floor… only she ended up going down a lot further than she anticipated. She learned a couple things in that instance, not the first of which was that she could apparently ‘see’ from any point on her body, now that she didn’t have actual eyeballs (wow, that is a lot of gum), but she didn’t have the time to do anything except lie in a puddle under the pews as the man went up the aisle. He was obviously looking for something, and it wouldn’t cost anything to guess what that something was, but he didn’t appear to see her in the darkness, and quickly passed by on the way towards the door.
Realizing that she didn’t have much time before he came back, Leena undulated forward, keeping under the rows of benches, until she reached the front of the chapel, and then scooted along the floor and through the door past the altar, and towards the clergy-only area in the back. Past the cabinets, through another door towards the kitchens, and…there, a side door. That should serve well enough. It took her a few tries to open the door, but she finally managed. Peering first around one side of the door, then the other, she ascertained that the coast was clear, she slid out into the clergy parking lot.

| Jeanne, on the other hand, found herself in a different predicament. Leaving the Honor Guard base was easy enough--so easy that it felt wrong. And so Jeanne chose not to flee; it was pointless, and she had no money to do so, having spent it all on disguising herself as a grown woman. In her subsequent departure from the lab in which she received her gauntlet, Jeanne spent the rest of her day thinking about how she'd leave and concluded that at dawn, she would gather her things, beg for her salary, give back the gauntlet, and leave without looking back. She fell asleep still clutching the offending piece to her chest, for it knew secrets that would get her burned at the stake if they were revealed. A part of Jeanne felt, therefore, that to subdue the tell-tale beast, she had to treat it kindly.
Her plans of flight were interrupted in the morning by the man who she'd spoken with in the lab. Her was sending her on active alpha-scouting duty, he told her. To New York. She'd be there on preemptive measures as the epidemic was worsening. Worsening to the point where the alpha gene was still dormant in people, and it was better to be eliminated before it caused unfathomable damage.
Jeanne's heart was pounding hard in her chest, for she felt like she had been discovered, and yet pardoned. She looked up from her place and saw only a man who smiled and saw through Jeanne as if he knew her true identity. She swallowed, waiting for a confrontation, to be questioned or for her to be captured and sent back to the laboratory as the dead specimen on the table this time. But that moment never came.
Having put the rest of her money in her back pocket--a measly amount of less than a hundred dollars--she left the base along with 3 of her colleagues, also rookies, on an express ground trip back to New York. During that time, Jeanne thought about beginning of her journey, about the 1000$ she'd stolen from her father's safe. One night she'd seen an opportunity to take the money as he had left it open, fallen asleep on the couch with drink still in hand. This corresponded with the night she first saw the Elements on television, and the first night her hair had risen on the back of her neck when thinking about her broader, overarching purpose. It was divine intervention.
Jeanne arrived by the afternoon and, as she walked the familiar streets in Honor Guard uniform, she was struck again by the feeling to run. She was not far from home and this filled her both with excitement at the opportunity and dread at the obviousness of it all.
In the early hours of the new day she saw her opportunity widen as she was called to the church she had spent some of her childhood Christmases in, some of her Easters in, in brief, where her family went when they wanted to pretend they at least made the effort to care about God. It felt like a stroke of extreme luck to be going back there and to know that maybe inside of it was somebody who she knew and who she had to murder. It was dark and moody and the tension was high. As the Guards split--two for the first door, two for the back--she knew that she couldn't do it.
She couldn't kill one of her own--she felt, at that point in time, that she was no longer the same species as humans, that she no longer possessed the same genome as humans--and therefore simply did not follow the same rules as humans. She turned towards her colleague, and pointed her hand in his direction.
"My friend, I am sorry," she said softly. This made him look at her quizzically, at which point she shone the flashlight at the highest brightness, enough to blind him. She ran towards him, kicked him clean in the solar plexus, and then ran for the hills.
Well, not quite. She ran for the side of the church and made herself small, knowing that she could hide but not exactly run faster than a bunch of athletes who ended up in the Honor Guard because they were strong and not, well, because they wanted to. She expected that once they realized their friend was stunned and another one of their friends was gone they would start chasing instead of predict her thought process, and surely enough, they did.
Jeanne knew her time was limited, but she also knew that if her cards were played right until the end, she had the opportunity to disappear forever. She began a slow and cautious walk towards the clergy parking lot, with an again authoritative, unshaken posture, knowing that if she pretended like she belonged, she would not be discovered.

| Leena starts to sidle out, keeping her vision trained on as much of the field as possible as she tries to get around the corner…
…and almost literally runs into a young woman rounding the corner at the same time.
The dynamic change as Leena’s full attention turns towards the girl is stunning, but so too is the tendril that lightly smacked the girl’s shoul-ohmygod
Leena pulls back as quickly and fully as she can, trying to limit what she touched (and inadvertently making herself much bigger and more visible for a few moments), but some residue was left on the girl’s left shoulder. The fabric began to smoke as the slime ate away at it.
Leena wants to do something, starts to reach forward, but sees her tendrils extend, and with a heavy heart realized that all she would do is make the situation worse.
“I’m sorry,” she cries in a low voice, before practically yelling “I’m sorry”, in heartfelt agony as she forces herself to recede and starts flowing towards the far end of the parking lot as quickly as she can

| Jeanne stood in shock for a good ten seconds like an old computer at maximum processing capacity, giving Leena a reasonable head start, as if she were Achilles and Leena were the tortoise. The small sound of sizzling cotton gabardine rang in her ears and in the scenery around her. At some point it sank through her clothing and rested on the small naked patch of skin that was smacked.
Jeanne then unfroze from her strange posture and looked around. Almost by instinct she lifted her right gauntlet hand in the direction of the strange slime scurrying away on the ground, pressed a few buttons on it and shone a noticeably reduced flashlight that followed the slime girl's trajectory.
"Hold on, hold on, stay right where you are." The authoritative words filled Jeanne with a certain charge. Maybe there existed a fundamental force in the universe called "power" and it came from humans arbitrarily wearing uniforms that made people think they were something else.
"You're human?" was the only question Jeanne felt like asking, with a good thirty second delay between the apology and her response.

| That voice, Leena thought. Almost sounds like…no, it couldn’t be…
Leena ‘s attention shifted backwards toward the girl, trying to get a look at her face, attempting to match it with the memory of a girl she knew…
With her attention elsewhere, Leena didn’t notice the storm drain in front of her. Normally, she would be more concerned with tripping over the concrete curb, but she still wasn’t completely familiar with just How Much Different her body was now
like how a liquid body filled in gaps, for example
Leena had about half a second to process the fact that she was now going down, but by then it was too late to do anything except try, and fail, to grab onto the edges of the grating and keep herself from falling downward
All of this could be summed up with a single word: “Shhhiiiit!”
And with that, Leena’s slimy form was squeezed into the drain. If she still possessed limbs, she would have been very uncomfortable indeed, but aside from the ‘eww’ feeling as she ended up with a couple glass battles and disposable lighters in her body, she felt no less comfortable in here than she had outside. Small favors, huh? She had even managed to keep hold of her wallet in the fall, and her pen, though the man’s wallet was nowhere to be found, and the handgun had gotten caught on the grating, awkwardly wedged barrel-up in the rusted steel

| Jeanne briskly walked after Leena once she noticed her falling down the drain. She looked down the grating with momentary confusion, as if it had committed a heinous crime by keeping her from her new slimy acquaintance.
She felt her breath catch in her throat as looked around herself, still high-strung, still homesick. She imagined her worried parents sleeping in the same bed, divided by the heavy sheets and the heavy news of her disappearance. For the first time since she'd left she began to feel sorry for somebody that was not herself, and this sentiment brought her to tears. The cold air and the ambient noise amplified this feeling. It wasn't fair.
Wiping her nose on her sleeve, she looked down at the grating again and noticed the gun stuck in cover, which she extracted with a soft touch. She didn't know the exact potency of slime, she she knew what it had done to her uniform, so she paid careful attention not to let the surface of the gun, careful not to have the barrel pointing at her face, maybe slimeless, but maybe containing slime at the microscopic level, not to touch her real hand. The gloves of the gauntlet would serve as preliminary testing.
She also found a wallet on the ground and ruffled through it, looking for information, but only found the identification of a male when the voice of the slimy tentacle monster that she'd stumbled upon was obviously female. Maybe it didn't belong to her, or maybe the new alpha manifestation included changing sex. Who knew.
"Is anybody in there?" Jeanne asked, her voice quizzical but steady again. She put her gloved finger through the little opening, because why not, she figured. At this point in time she didn't really care what happened in the confrontation between alpha A and alpha B, and the mood had gotten her rather philosophical, so she extracted her finger before any random dark creature could grapple onto it. She removed the cover instead, with a little bit of effort, and peered inside with the help of her flashlight. She didn't really see anything resembling what she'd just seen, but it was useful enough to try looking.

| Before the girl can remove the grating, a Leena pushes a tendril up, no thicker than a finger, to look at the girl at about eye level, focusing all of her visuals on peering over the flashlight into the girl’s face
The bright white light highlighted the tones of deep tones of the purple and the proud undertones of red in the substance, almost making the tendril look like a piece of art, if not for the drops that slipped down the length and back to the main mass. Leena really didn’t pay them any attention She was more concerned with what she saw
The shape of the eyes, the curve of the lips- this was an expression Leena didn’t recall having seen on this face before, but the face itself was unmistakable.
‘…Jeanne?’

| When Jeanne made "eye contact" with the tendril, she again was stuck like a deer in headlights. She dropped the grating she was lifting and stayed there for only the split second required to reach for it with both hands. Her bare hand on the top and her gauntlet hand on the bottom.
"What?"
It really only took her a second of pain to quickly remove her bare hand from the tendril, but her gauntlet hand kept her tight grip.
Jeanne was battling emotions related to whether or not this creature should die or live because of the whole holy honor guard thing, but all she knew was that she could not come to a meaningful decision if Leena were to escape. Regardless, she was leaning towards live, but she still felt too lonely to just let the slime person go without answers.
"How do you know my name?!"
At that point Jeanne realized the futility of trying to pull a liquid out of a hole by squeezing it, but it didn't stop her from tugging.

| Jeanne’s pulling wasn’t really accomplishing anything in terms of getting Leena out of the drain, but it was obviously hurting her, so Leena slowly pulled two more tendrils out of the drain, slimmer this time, and tried to make calming motions “Jeanne, Jeanne, calm down, it’s…”
Leena sighed, bubbling again, and allowed the tendrils to droop. There was no way Jeanne would recognize her like this. So… She was going to try something really difficult.
Leena took a moment, ‘blinking’ as it were, and pulled a little more slime up from her main mass, pulling the tendrils together at the same time. With this single mass, she started trying to pull the slime into the shape of her face. It was remarkably hard work, trying to keep the slime together and not drip constantly, but she managed. After that, she just had to shape it- Leena knew the contours of her own face pretty well, considering her occupation, but she had never been much of an artist, and there was a lot about her new form she didn’t know how to control yet.
That said, a few moments later, she had a decent replica of her former face, the face of Leena Lazarek instead of the shapeless blob that she had now become.
“Jeanne, it’s me; it’s Leena”
She managed to get that out, and even managed to smile, but the strain on her concentration was immense. This was going to take a lot of practice if she wanted to do this normally.

| And then Jeanne let go. Memories of Jeanne sleeping over at Leena's house struck her suddenly, the smell of the foreign bedsheets and the smell of the kitchen, the look the aloof but responsible big sister gave to her well-cared-for little sisters, the littlelest of which was Jeanne's cherished friend. A friend who she abandoned.
But she couldn't admit that. She couldn't believe that.
"Leena?" she thought pathetically about the new form the big sister had taken and once again it made her want to cry. She sniffled a bit as she kept herself from personal humiliation, and instead squared her shoulders, put her head up, maintained a more neutral expression; more like the frustratingly haughty but always mildly confused resting face of the younger Jeanne, who always seemed like she wanted to be somewhere else.
Sheepishly, she scooted away and finally properly pulled the cover off the drain, peering inside with the flashlight on dim.
"I'm sorry..." she cleared her throat, and gesticulated like a confused pedestrian that couldn't really be bothered to explain why they just caused a car crash. "You're just... a pile of goo."

| Leena laughed
She couldn’t help it; the statement was just too spot-on. Her face collapsed back into the main mass as her chortles sent ripples all the way through her body.
“Yes, yes I suppose I am!”
With the grate gone, Leena can more easily pull the bulk of herself up the lip of the storm drain to put herself on level with her youngest sister’s best friend. If she still had arms, her elbows would be resting on the ground while her hands supported her chin. For a moment, it almost felt casual again
But only for a moment Leena settled down again when she got a better look at the gauntlet on Jeanne’s hand- silver and blue, looked highly advanced. If Leena had to guess, it looked like Honor Guard tech.
She settled her gaze on Jeanne’s face again. “So, what have you been up to?”
It was a pretty open question- Jeanne’s parents had come to her when Jeanne first gone off the radar, and they had all been worried sick, but it could also question what had brought her back to New York, and with such…unusual toys. It had been an interesting trip, from the looks of it

| Jeanne blinked. She sat on the grass, caressing the gauntlet that was a reminder of her new identity, in the uniform that was a reminder of her old.
"I stole a thousand dollars from my father's cabinet, took a one-way trip to the Honor Guard base where I was recruited under a different name and age. I underwent express training for three days and on my fourth received this gauntlet," at which she motioned self-evidently, "and, well,"
She sighed. "This piece of equipment has a function that allows alpha dna to be spotted through skin. I tested it on myself and," she grit her teeth, "um, the uh, the results were... positive. Which were very much not, ah, positive... for me.
"I had to desert again." She looked at Leena's... slimy form, as if looking for validation. "Otherwise I risked death. So when I was called to a mission, which just happened to be this exact church, I... well..."
Jeanne tried to keep it cryptic, for she figured that the more she talked, the more banal her situation became, which was exactly what Jeanne wanted to avoid. She took a larger breath than usual. "There's a reason you encountered no honor guards but myself."

| Leena was silent for a few long moments. If she still had eyelids, she would have blinked them a couple times during that monologue. That was a lot to take in
but in the end...
Leena gave a short sigh, wrapped that gauntlet-ed hand in two tendrils, and lifted it up. If she still had hands, they would be cover it top and bottom- hell, if she still had arms she would be giving the girl a hug right about now, but this was the best she could do.
"I'm glad you're safe."

| Jeanne felt a prisoner of the same uniform that had previously given her a feeling of confidence, an impostor that shouldn't be permitted to exist. She felt like a traitor to her own race with every breath that she took, and those breaths got heavier to accept the more she took them. Leena's presence was only a reminder of how far they'd erred; in her she no longer saw the virtuous older sister of her childhood, but a monster who she tolerated only because of the mind that was still left inside.
When Leena touched her gauntlet, Jeanne recoiled slightly, but otherwise did not change anything about her demeanor. Her feelings were expertly concealed inside her tar-black heart and her wicked brain. She smiled painfully.
"I need to get out of these clothes," she said. "I'm almost certain they will start looking for me, but they know neither my name nor my hometown. This is the only identifier."
Jeanne hesitated. "Do you... uh..." She gestured. "Know a way back home?"

| Leena smiled, or at least that was what she would be doing. Her spirits soared for the first time in the last few hours. This, at least, she knew how to do.
“Of course “, she replied, taking Jeanne by the hand and beginning to lead her towards the mouth of the alley. She only got a few steps though before she pulled up short. An unpleasant thought had occurred to her.
“…if I take you home, what happens if the Honor Guard manage to track us? Even if they don’t know who you are now, they may find out if we leave them enough breadcrumbs.”
Leena went silent for a second, then turned her attention back to Jeanne and started looking her over. She made some mental measurements and comparisons- Jeanne was a hair smaller through the chest, and definitely had smaller hips, but the size differentials were manageable.
“There is a fitness center five blocks from here; I have some work-out clothes in one of the lockers. It’s not much, but it’s a start. After that, well… we’ll deal with it when we get there.”

| Strangely from what felt like the front of Jeanne's skull she could feel a light pressure start to form as small, transparent specks started to form in her vision. While they certainly weren't enough to block her vision they were most certainly there, as if they were trying to tell her something... All of a sudden in a flash of light she could suddenly see a great deal more. Around her she could see light bouncing off various surfaces in her immediate vicinity as well as through walls. It was a surreal feeling that would likely disorient her as her regular vision competed with the new, widened vision. While the view was nothing short of miraculous, it was certainly short lived.
As Jeanne gazed upon what could clearly be labeled as an Alpha ability her eyes would land on the Church; namely, the people inside. There she could see what she recognized as the outline of their pastor, along with a far bulkier shape that stood at least 8 feet tall. She knew the contours of its armor all too well, it looks like Jeannes' replacement arrived. She wouldn't be able to recognize him outright, but with the way the pastor pointed at the back door you're sure you wont have the time to figure it out.

| Leena begins to lead Jeanne once more, this time towards the opposite side of the parking lot, intending to take her behind the church and as straight down the street as she could.
Once again, however, she pulls short- this time however, it is Jeanne who stops their progress. Her hands dropped to her sides, her eyes grew distant, as if she were peering at something far in the distance. The problem was, the only thing that was 'distant' in her line of vision was a bare concrete wall... 10 feet away. Something was wrong
Leena's mind began to work faster what is happening; What is happening!
Jeanne had mentioned that the gauntlet's sensor had shown her being positive for Alpha presence, so perhaps it was her powers activating... only... what are they?
It wasn't anything external, or she'd have seen it already. Jeanne's eyes were the only indicator, but what did that even mean? Was she suddenly seeing in different colors? Was she about to start shooting fireballs out of her eyes? Or was some larger change approaching, and Jeanne was about to lose consciousness? ...damn, I don't know enough about powers!
"Jeanne? Jeanne?! What's wrong? What's happening?"

| After what seemed like an eternity, Jeanne gasped and shook her head, closing her eyes. When she saw that she could see even with her eyes closed--an aberration of nature, an impossibility, light was not supposed to be touching her retinas, she gasped again, and louder.
Jeanne then proceeded to rest her head in her hands, shocked, dazed and confused.
"Leena," she said softly, after swallowing. "There's an individual in Honor Guard armor inside the church and he is speaking with the pastor."
She got up, flight again triumphing against fight, and spread herself flat against the side of the building. In another soft motion, she gave her gloved hand to Leena's gelatinous mass, and began walking with a brisk pace in a direction she deemed the least conspicuous: away from the roads, away from the people. "Don't ask me how I know," she added.
"Because I don't know."

| Leena relaxed momentarily- if anything, it didn’t seem like Jeanne’s powers were immediately dangerous to her, or more importantly to Jeanne herself. But she couldn’t relax just yet: even if she were seeing into the future and not the present, trouble was on the way, and Leena didn’t want either of them anywhere near here when it arrived. Jeanne started walking towards the alley, immediately trying to get away from the danger, while also keeping away from people. There was tension in both her body and her voice, and she must have been terrified, but she was keeping a cool head and thinking clearly- Leena was so proud of her in that moment, but it would be best if both of them thought rationally for now, so she stowed the emotions. Jeanne was still walking when Leena flowed around to spin her down a side street, which she did for two reasons. First, so that if the Honor Guard came out into the parking lot, (s)he couldn’t just look down the alley and spot them. Secondly, even though there weren’t many people on the streets this early in the morning, she didn’t want to have to cross main thoroughfairs any more than she had to, and they would have to cross two as it was already.
As they reached the end of the branch and came up on the numbered street, Leena pulled Jeanne to a stop before letting go of her hand, sidling up to the very edge of the building, and extending just enough of herself to see down both lanes while keeping to the shadows as much as she could

| Jeanne slinked to the edge as well, but she seemed more confused than worried at that point in time. What was even worse is that she had a blend of horror and awe on her face, as if she didn't know whether she should scream or clap at what was happening in front of her.
"I can see everything," she told Leena in a vague, confiding tone.
She did; she saw pavements yards away, lit by streetlight; she saw foliage and grass lit by moon, the vague outlines of faces of young individuals staying up late at night staring at their computers in tall apartment buildings, a permanent scowl on one, mouth slightly gaping on another. It seemed clear to her that she was seeing things lit by something, but all things were not like the other. There remained a blind spot behind her head, in the dark alleyway, that did not exist when she was out in the parking lot, when her powers first manifested.
She tried to concentrate on the Honor Guard's whereabouts again, for she was certain she could not yet relax, and she also felt as if she had been seen and tracked already. There was a certain limit to the range of her abilities, she gathered; otherwise she'd know what was happening at home, or the house next door where Aaron lived, but she didn't. Her range seemed to fuzz at some radius, but she couldn't accurately pinpoint the location.

| Leena didn't see anyone coming in either direction for as far as the eye could see, but they were at roughly the halfway point between the streets, so if anyone turned the corner they would have no time to react.
Her attention shifted however, and she left her tendril sticking out as her 'vision' turned back to Jeanne.
"...everything? ...what do you see?"
Leena was worried about Jeanne's mixed reactions to her developing powers, but there would be time to fuss over them once they were out of this hunting ground.
"...Jeanne, we are going to have to cross this street, to the alley across the way," Leena said as she gestured with her still extended tendril. She continued, "can you see anyone on the north-south streets on either side of us?"

| Jeanne chose to momentarily ignore Leena's question, partly because she could not answer, partly because she didn't feel like it. She was reveling in the knowledge of power while simultaneously hating her new condition, but she couldn't accurately explain that without mincing her words.
"There's nobody," Jeanne whispered with no hesitation. "Let's go."
Jeanne gave her right hand to her partner in crime's tendril and began the brisk walk through the numbered street to the other side of the alley.

| Jeanne wasn't being completely honest with her, but there wasn't time for that
There were too many things that concerned Leena at the moment- pedestrians, early-morning commuters, streetlights, cameras- so she had no more concern that getting back to the relative safety of the shadows as soon as she could.
it was about a 40-foot walk to get from alleyway to alleyway, which at Jeanne's pace took about 8 seconds. Under the circumstances it felt much more like a mile walk under a spotlight's glare. She expected at any moment for someone to turn the corner, or for the Honor Guard to call out from behind them.
But no one came
The two of them reached the mouth of the alleyway without incident, and Leena was glad to melt into the shadows once more. Taking the lead again, she slid forward and around the corner, taking a zig-zag pattern through the backstreets. It would lose them some time, but it would also keep them from view until they could reach their destination

| As Leena was leading Jeanne through the alleys, she took it as an opportunity to whisper softly to her, in tones that she'd never used in her life. A newfound confidence was electrifying. The security of knowing where everything was, where everything was going. She could tell the future by analyzing the present.
"Leena," a soft murmur, delicate in its tension, like a single string being tightened on a violin. The name felt good on her lips, much in the same way that Leena's form did not please her eyes or her soul. This disjointed her from her heightened state of awareness, but not as much as she feared. "Slow down, there is no rush. There is nobody."
"I see through walls," she described, as they were walking. "But not through them. More so I can see what's inside of them. And I see the ground around and behind us. I see roofs, I see through the inside of chimneys. I see the lit faces of people staring at their computer screens, of people staring at their phones as they walk on the street far away from us."
She took the moment to catch her breath, and looked, knowledgeably, in some vague direction, different from where they were going. "I see the counter-tops inside that house's kitchen. It looks like marble." Another breath. "They have damascus steel cooking knives," she added as a finishing touch, although admittedly her powers did not allow her to see what kind of steel it was. It was just guesswork.
