Saren could no longer sit still, so she stood not really paying attention much to Nerea, and stretched, before running off the ledge outside the cave and flying high into the cave, before swooping low so that she flew over the lake fairly quickly. After a few moment's of flying so low, she rose into the air again, headed for the spring from earlier.

Circling, she landed, looking around and not noticing anything of importance. Sighing softly, she stayed still for a moment, before walking over to an inlet in along the shoreline, looking up. With a fierce determined look in her eye, she opened her mouth, breathing lightning as best as she could. Instead of a perfect bolt like she had wanted, she ended up getting a scattering of sparks and jolts, that though pretty faded soon after leaving her mouth.

Saren growled lightly, her claws digging into the soft earth of the shore, and she was determined to try again.

Pacis stared at the cloak man for a short few seconds before speaking, as if he were still trying to piece together his words.

"What are you intending to do with us in your research? I somehow doubt you are using us for observational research on dragon habbits. It seems obvious we were not your first batch." Pacis stated, as he stood on his feet remaining in place.

The Cloaked man stood there for a moment before saying,"I intend to see how you grow, and if you survive. If you saw the other batches, you'd know none lived more then two days. If the experiment works, then I let all of you go free."

Varek had made his preparations for the night, but the baby dragon felt the need to... stay up late.

He walked outside, and made his way down river to the shoreline as his smoke arose behind him. The shore wasn't close to the cave, but the river was straight enough for it to be in plain view from the river mouth. Varek decided he'd go and see just how many experiments had failed. He entered the water with a loud splash. It was immediately clear he wasn't a great swimmer, so he laid near the surface and gazed down into the lake.

"More then two days...?" Pacis said to himself, as he had not witnessed what the others had.
"But why? I don't understand." Pacis ignorantly asked, feeling as if he needed to know.

Irritated, Saren tried again, having taken the moment to rest. Coiling her body up like she was about to leap into the water, only instead, she let lightning hurl itself from her throat, arching up into the sky enough so that it was visible from the cave and various other clear sections... But still, Saren knew it wasn't perfect.

Panting and frustrated, she allowed herself to lie down, and she promptly began to drink some water, feeling some residual voltage spark in her mouth as she drank.

"Why? So that I can make a new breed of dragon. Sure, a lot had to die for the cause, but this is the way it goes. The unworthy die and the strong live on. It's why I'm here for all these years." The Cloaked man replied, before adding on,"any other questions?"

Varek would see that the lake was a lot deeper then he thought, but he could see hints of the very bottom, and it was very rough and bumpy, not smooth as most lake bottoms are.

Varek felt a need to look closer, unaffected by residual shocks.

He lifted his head up, taking a deep breath before diving to get a closer look at the depths.

When he got to the bottom, he noticed that the entire bottom was covered in a mix of bones and scales. Some structures were actually made from piling scales and the erosion crushing them together.

The young Bronze tried again, electricity arching upward so that it was once again visible, but still, Saren knew that something was off. Weary, she laid back down, resting her head on her front paws in exasperation. What could she be doing that was possibly wrong...?

Varek immediately surfaced. Nobody but those near the shore would hear his massive gasp.

He immediately walked out of the water and onto the beach. He didn't trust the cloaked man, but would make due for now.

Upon seeing the bolt of lightning, Validus sits upright, stairing off into the distance silently, focused on listening for what may be going on. After a moment, he growls audibly and sprints outside and off the edge of the cliff, spreading his wings the moment he leaves the cliff.

He glides all the way to Saren and lands about 15 feet away, teeth bared and looking around the area she was in for any sign of danger. He stays like this for a few moments before slowly calming down. He approaches her.

"What happened? Are you alright? I saw your lightning and thought you were in trouble..."

Saren shook her head, lifting it to look over at Validius. "No no... I'm fine... I'm just trying to perfect my lightning... It isn't a true bolt, but a scattering of electrical charges..." She said softly, moving closer to the water's edge so she could drink. When she was done with that, she sat up, stretching, and looking up. She felt... Something stirring within her. A sort of calling to try that one last time...

Pacis still somewhat did not come to a full understanding, but he learned what he needed to know. And that was all he wanted. He stretched his wings and without saying a word, flew back to the cave leaving the Cloaked man to wander back in on his own.

After a moment of waiting at the edge of the cave for Pacis and the man to finish their private conversation, Nerea concluded that it would be much more productive for her to leave, as she had nothing to add anyway. Her new wings were aching from their bullet-start use after most likely months of formation inside her egg, but it didn't bother her so much as to stop flying altogether.

So, she adamantly flew up in the air, taking a jump start from the edge, and flew in direction to the place she had picked as her nest.

(Most likely the last post for the RP day.)

Six hours; not that he had any notion of that time, but it took him six hours to dig into the knoll enough to be satisfied. Clay, and ash, and clay, and dirt; there were piles strewn here and there with root bulbs and knots sticking out of the piles. He was even chewing on a discarded root, drawing all the water from its fibers as he chewed.

Covered in mud, Smarag stood back from his work with pride, still chewing on the root bulb like grass cud. He ruled his burrow a success, having a deep enough entry to shield him from wandering eyes, and a nice array of dangling roots from the tree still holding steadfast above the knoll. After he snorted a cough, Smarag spit the root out and slowly entered his lair.

A slender access tunnel, just big enough for his current size, led to a chamber about twice his size. It was pitch dark, and Smarag soon found the cool and comfort of the hole lulling and he fell asleep; hopefully the cloaked man wouldn't mind his absence. Besides, what better way to prove ones survival instinct than to face the wilds alone.

The bronze coloured dragon stood, swishing her tail as she growled at the sky lightly. Crouching slightly, Saren released lightning into the sky, a perfect lightning bolt flashing up into the clouds and crackling around in the clouds. Saren grinned lightly, before she sunk down to her belly panting lightly. She was exhausted, but she could do it... Maybe she should work on how much power she put out with each bolt now...?

It is the next day. The sun started to come up as normal, a light dew on the grass as the mountains chilled the valley. Everything was peaceful, except for a few things... Everyone seemed to have grown well past what they used to be, and the Cloaked Man was nowhere to be seen.

Saren stirred, stretching and yawning, before she blinked. Was she supposed to be this high...? When she asked herself, she knew she wasn't supposed to be this big. She sighed, and looked down at herself, before looking at the spring curiously. Smiling, she slithered forward, before sinking into the water. It took her a moment, but soon she was swimming somewhat, and she smiled. It was right about then that she spotted a fish passing by.

Grinning, the dragon snatched up the fish, and swallowed it whole, smiling lightly... Not to get another. Smiling, she continued to swim forward.

The cobalt dragon woke up in fear. Something felt wrong. He dashed outside, faster than he thought he could have managed and looked in a pool of water.

He felt many times more energized than yesterday, and was twice as big. Something was terribly wrong, and he knew it. But what could he do? He would ask the cloaked man about it later, but for now it would be a 'let's not leave home till stuff gets sticky' type game. He opened parts of the wall separating the main cavern from the smoke tunnel, quickly moving the butchered and smoked sea snake parts to the farthest in part of the cave, and one of the few parts surrounded by rock walls.

He liked to live near the forest anyway, so taking up space into the cave was hardly a problem. Sharing had left his mind. He couldn't leave the cave. No, what would the others think when he came out twice as large on day 2? He'd be able to live on this snake comfortably for a week.

Breaking from the Shell - Page 9 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Breaking from the Shell    Breaking from the Shell - Page 9 EmptyTue 19 Apr 2011 - 18:12

Deja Vu.
Smarag woke to a surprise. It seemed, that his den had shrank considerably as he slept, but He could still smell the dirt; he was sure that he hadn't somehow been placed back in his egg and surely the hole hadn't collapsed.

He forced himself to forget the immediate mystery and focus on getting out. He shifted on his belly towards the entrance, which was now considerable smaller as well. He jammed his head through the opening but was quickly blocked at the shoulders; no good and not much room for moving dirt around. Survival test, number one; digging out of here.

He began just around the opening; using his head as a chisel, he worked to scraping down the bottom, pushing dirt into the entrance tunnel itself to get it out of the way. Slowly, with a lot of time and patience he managed to make room for one and then finally the other arm. With stronger tools than the scales on his head alone, he could work faster, but still he had to discover the right balance; where to move dirt where and how much.

He had to tediously push dirt behind him as he carved the entrance out, and if he moved too much one way or the other, he'd risk sealing himself in, or finding himself just as immobile as when he started. Luckily, what had been three times his length the night before was now reduced to a little more than one full body length. And all in all he managed to carve himself out in a matter of hours.

As soon as he saw the first specs of daylight glowing through the thinning barrier, he began pushing against the front, attempting to break the rest of the way through, a few failed attempts, and subsequent scrapings, and he accomplished those ends, spewing out of the ground in a pile of loose dirt as he rolled to the ground. Exhausted, he sprawled out and took heavy breaths. The muscles in his arms burned from the effort, and he was famished; the remains of that seperpant sounded more than appetizing.

After catching his breath he rolled over, cringing as he arms cried under his weight. In this moment, his new size registered, and he came to the undenyable conclusion that an entire world could not shrink. He had nearly doubled in size in the few hours he'd slept. Looking at the ruin of his den, he released a frustrated cough, he hadn't expected to need a bigger lair for some time; something was wrong or at the least, unusual. Still, his hunger was taking the helm at the moment.

He spread his wings, and slowly walked up the elevation of the knoll to bound into the air and flap to the sky. His arms felt some relief hangling beneath him, and he soon felt comfortable enough to begin sniffing out the alluring scent of rotting meat.

How could a small, purple dragon become so big as to wake up with her sides pushing uncomfortably at the lush trees she had so comfortably set herself down between, the night before?

In confusion, Nerea wiggled herself free of her own nest and came to the conclusion that she most definitely could not spend the next night there, especially if her next change would be just as gargantuan. While not necessarily looking forward to the prospect of having a larger body, she didn't mind the extra strength. It felt, obviously, empowering.

The purple dragon grinned briefly. She was willing to accept anything by then, especially since the change wasn't bad. She assumed that was what the man had referred to when he had said it was an 'experiment'. She acknowledged it wasn't normal.

But musings aside, she opened her freshly improved wings and flew out of the forest, in direction of where the remains of the serpent were left the day before. She was hungry, after all.

Having no luck in sniffing out anything particularly dead enough for him to eat, he eventually had guided himself back to the lake side, where he found the remains of the serpant. Smarag's nose told him the carcass hadn't quite putrified, but it appeared abandoned and that was a start.

Swooping in low and as quietly as he could manage, he moved up to the remains, while vigilantly scanning his surroundings to prepare himself for possible ambush by a flock of scavengers, or intimidating competition. Still quiet, he resigned to being alone and started picking at dangling strips attached to the beasts exposed spinal-cord.

Varek popped his head out of his cave, seeing Smarag swoop by at the carcass far down near the lake. He was big too. Maybe this applied to all of them. He headed out of his cavern and made his way downstream to the lake, eying Smarag and heading in his direction. He felt slightly more comfortable now, but was concerned about someone taking the smoked serpent in his cave. He shouldn't be so greedy, or maybe he should.

"So it's happened to you too." He said in a deeper, more concentrated voice, almost jumping at its sound.
